News of the sad death of a Soldier from 1st Battalion, The Royal Welsh in Afghanistan. The MOD has released this:

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh. The soldier was killed as a result of a gunshot wound sustained during an exchange of fire with insurgents that happened near Showal, in the Nad-e-Ali District of Helmand Province, during the afternoon of 7 April 2010.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said:

It is my sad duty to have to inform you that a soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Welsh was killed this afternoon in an area to the south east of Showal in Nad-e Ali District, central Helmand. He was on a foot patrol which came under attack from insurgents and in the ensuing fire-fight he was shot and killed. He died doing his duty and he will be deeply missed by us, his comrades, but his indomitable courage in the face of the enemy will be remembered.
