Soldier from 3 RIFLES killed in Afghanistan

Always and Forever

Another day in Afghanistan and sadly another death.  This time a soldier from 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 Rifles has been killed, again by small arms fire. The MOD has this.

It is with sadness that the Ministry of Defence must confirm the death of a soldier from 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) in Afghanistan during the morning of Tuesday 2 March 2010.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel David Wakefield, said:

“It is my sad duty to inform you that a British soldier from 3 RIFLES was killed by small arms fire this morning in Sangin, northern Helmand.

“He was part of a team from 3 RIFLES partnering Afghan National Army soldiers at a vehicle checkpoint to the south east of Sangin district centre, when the checkpoint was fired on.

“He died protecting the people of Sangin. He will be sorely missed by us, his comrades; we will remember him.”

Next of kin have been informed and have asked for a period of grace before further details are released.

This death is not connected to Operation MOSHTARAK

This will be truly a sad day for all his family and friends and I offer them my condolences. May he Rest in Peace.
