Nansato Nursery Trust

I thought I’d put up a little blog entry about something we are very pleased about today. It put a big smile on our faces and a huge smile on our youngest son.

Yesterday was the last day of term at my youngest’s primary school, in fact it was his last day at primary school, and it was a surprise to him when he learnt during their final assembly that he had won first prize in a competition to design a logo for the Nansato Trust.  The logo and all the prize winners are displayed below. The Nansato trust runs  four primary schools in Malawi and more details are later in the post.

This was a wonderful surprise to us as parents as well, as Ruaridh when he started at primary school after two years at a learning unit, was perhaps worse at drawing than myself which was a notable achievement in itself.

Ruaridh has since he started at five in the learning unit come on leaps and bounds, from a youngster with little speech and very poor social skills has developed into a typical young teenager. His sheer dogged stubbornness and determindness has taken him through some trying times to a point where few, if any, people would realise that at five years old his prognosis was poor for a normal school life.

Yesterday he was just a very pleased youngster coming home with his prize certificate and prize to his proud parents.

How it began

My name is Paula Scott, I am a primary school teacher in Scotland. In 2004, I was given the opportunity to teach in a primary school in a small village in Malawi, Southern Africa. While I was there I fell in love with the people and the culture. I returned to Malawi in October ’05 to see people again.

While visiting the homes of many pupils I noticed that young children in the village had little to occupy them. With my experience in education and love for children I decided to build a nursery.

Through the building and operating of the nursery I saw a way to give employment to local people, provide care, education and one nourishing meal a day to children in their pre-school year.

You can read more about it’s work on the the projects website.

Paula Scott was a teacher at Ruaridh’s school and taught him whilst he was in Primary 4 and was one of the best and most dedicated teachers I have ever met.

They are a very worthwhile project and I am sure they would welcome any support you can give.

Welcome to Nansato Project.
