MoD ‘ignored’ air safety warnings for Nimrod

RAF Nimrod

According to the BBC’s File on 4 the MOD ignored air safety warnings for a number of aircraft types including the Nimrod and Hercules. These warnings might have saved the lives of 31 members of the Armed Forces.

File on 4 has apparently  heard that before each of the three crashes military chiefs and Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials were made aware of technical problems.

Two Sea King helicopters collided in 2003, a Hercules plane crashed in 2005 and a Nimrod jet exploded in 2006.

What the programme has done is link three separate incidents where we already knew there were issues in the past to show a systematic pattern of not properly heeding safety warnings by the MOD.

The information revealed by File on 4 is not new, it is just being used to show a pattern which distressingly may have led to the deaths of members of the Armed Forces. I don’t think this will a surprise to many. It appears to be the the way the MOD works in the penny-pinching world forced upon it by the ex-chancellor and current Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The tragedy of this is that it’s well know in military circles. Last year I was speaking to an RAF pilot from Lossiemouth and he was telling me about the problems they have with the MoD. The army of course have the same because they’re not permitted funds to bring radio equipment bang up to date. Everything ordered takes years to get to the QMs and obviously well out of date by then.
