Afghanistan: UK soldier killed in Afghan blast

A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan.
The soldier, from the Joint Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group, died after the blast in central Helmand province on Monday afternoon.
British army spokesman Lt Col Nick Richardson said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends so affected by this tragic event.”
The soldier’s family have been informed. A total of 187 UK soldiers have died in Afghanistan since 2001.
Col Richardson added: “The death of any comrade brings sadness to the task force but we are consoled by the fact that these deaths are not in vain.”
A British soldier killed in an explosion in Afghanistan on Sunday has been named as Cpl Joseph Etchells.
Cpl Etchells, 22, from Mossley in Greater Manchester, served with 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
Of the total number of British forces’ deaths in Afghanistan, 18 have happened this month.
